eMadrid to Become Default Platform for International Trademark Management

In a significant move to modernize and streamline international intellectual property, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will officially make its new eMadrid system the default platform for managing international trademark registrations starting in September 2025. This transition marks the end of the beta phase for eMadrid and positions it as the central digital hub for trademark professionals worldwide. The new system is designed to replace the legacy Madrid Portfolio Manager, providing a more intuitive and efficient user experience.

What Is eMadrid?

eMadrid is a fully integrated online platform designed to streamline the filing, management, and monitoring of international trademark applications and registrations. It provides a secure, user-friendly environment with features like an integrated workbench, real-time updates, and built-in guidance to help users throughout the trademark lifecycle. The platform also includes collaboration tools, allowing teams to share access and permissions.

Key Features of eMadrid

  • Integrated Workbench: Manage applications and registrations in one secure place with powerful sorting, filtering, and batch processing capabilities.
  • Collaboration Tools: Share access, set roles and permissions, and work efficiently with your team.
  • Real-Time Updates: Stay informed with alerts and prompts for key actions.
  • Built-In Guidance: Complete transactions confidently with validation, pre-filled fields, and step-by-step assistance.
  • Certified Documents: Access registration and renewal certificates under the “Certified documents” tab in your eMadrid workbench.

Transition from Madrid Portfolio Manager

As part of this transition, WIPO is phasing out the Madrid Portfolio Manager. Access to registration and renewal certificates has already been disabled in the Portfolio Manager, and these documents can now be found under the “Certified documents” tab in the eMadrid workbench.

User Adoption and Feedback

Since its beta launch, eMadrid has seen strong adoption, with users from over 130 countries exploring the platform. Approximately 20% of active international trademark registrations are now managed through eMadrid, including about 76% of the largest portfolios.

Users have praised the platform’s intuitive design and efficiency. Katerina Grishina, a European Trademark Attorney from Latvia, noted, “The intuitive design of the interfaces makes navigating between different Madrid System services seamless, streamlining my workflow.”

What You Need to Do Now

To ensure a smooth transition, trademark holders and representatives are strongly encouraged to start using eMadrid immediately. A WIPO Account is required to access all features, and users can create one on the official eMadrid website.

For any questions or feedback, WIPO has established a “Contact Us” feature within the eMadrid beta environment to provide direct support to users. The transition to eMadrid represents WIPO’s commitment to leveraging digital technology to simplify and enhance the protection of intellectual property rights in a globalized economy.
